iOS 17.4 Beta Hints at Landscape Face ID Camera

Do you love your iPad? Do you wish you could unlock it with your face no matter how you hold it? Well, you might be in luck, because Apple is working on a new iPad that can do just that. 🙌

How do we know this?

Some smart people at 9to5Mac have looked inside the latest iOS 17.4 beta, which is a test version of the software that runs on iPhones and iPads. They found some clues that Apple is making a new iPad with a special camera that can recognize your face in landscape mode. That means you can use Face ID to unlock your iPad, pay for things, or log into apps when you hold it sideways. 😎

Why this iOS 17.4 beta leak is a big deal?

Right now, if you have an iPad Pro with Face ID, you can only use it when you hold your iPad vertically, or up and down. That’s because the camera that scans your face is on the side of the screen when you hold it horizontally, or left and right. This can be annoying if you want to use your iPad in landscape mode, like when you watch videos, play games, or type with a keyboard. You have to turn your iPad around or tilt your head to make Face ID work. 😒

But with the new iPad, you won’t have to do that. The camera will be on the top of the screen when you hold it sideways, so you can use Face ID without any hassle. Apple even changed the iOS setup process to tell you how to use Face ID in landscape mode. It says something like this: “Face ID needs to be in landscape to learn how to recognize you. During Face ID setup, iPad needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen. Once setup is complete, Face ID works in portrait and landscape.” 🙌

When will we see this new iPad?

We don’t know for sure, but it could be soon. The only iPad that has a landscape front camera right now is the 10th generation iPad, but it doesn’t have Face ID, it has Touch ID, which is the fingerprint scanner. So this new iPad will be different from any other iPad we’ve seen before. It will probably be an iPad Pro, which is the most powerful and expensive iPad. 💸

There are also some rumors that Apple is making some other changes to the iPad Pro, like giving it a new design, a new magnetic charger, a better screen, and more storage space. These rumors come from Bloomberg, which is a reliable source of Apple news. But we won’t know for sure until Apple announces the new iPad, which could happen anytime this year. 🤞

What else is new in iOS 17.4 beta?

iOS 17.4 beta is not just about the new iPad. It also has some other features that are related to the European Union, which is a group of countries that have some rules for how tech companies should behave. For example, iOS 17.4 beta lets you install apps from outside the App Store, which is called sideloading. This gives you more choices, but also more risks, because some apps might not be safe or legal. 😬

iOS 17.4 beta also has some changes to how you can choose your default apps, which are the apps that open automatically when you do something like tap a link or send an email. You can now choose from more options, not just the ones made by Apple. This gives you more freedom, but also more responsibility, because some apps might not work well with your device or your privacy. 😕

These features are not available to everyone yet, because they are still in beta, which means they are still being tested and improved. If you want to try them out, you need to join the Apple Beta Software Program, which lets you download and install iOS 17.4 beta on your iPhone or iPad. But be careful, because beta software can have bugs or problems that can affect your device or your data. 😱
